Desertfest Berlin, 4.-6.5.2018

 www.desertfest.de

It's been a while since I have been at bigger festivals abroad (DJ:ing at Roadburn 2014, to be exact), and even now this happened almost accidentally. Just one month before the festival I received a last-call email from Desertfest Berlin saying that they were closing their press accreditations soon. I filled in the form without thinking much, and was soon accredited. Okay, flights, hotel, some money and I was ready to go! I even had quite a lot of friends going, excellent. I had only heard good things about this festival before. This year the festival had moved to a new place: Arena on the other side of the river than the previous area. Arena is a huge, old buss terminal that can hold up to 9 500 people. All the bands were playing on two stages that were placed side by side. This meant that you could see all the bands without any overlaps. It also had a few disadvantages but I'll get back to that later.

This festival certainly focuses on heavy stoner/desert/fuzz/occult/hard rock & doom metal bands but there were also a few more psych or space rock bands on the lineup. Monster Magnet is an old fave of mine and since they were not going to play in Finland on this tour I was excited to see them. The band I was mostly looking forward to see was Swedish psychedelic space rock band Yuri Gagarin since I've really been enjoying their studio output and had not seen them live before. Most of the bands were at least somehow familiar to me but there were also some that I had never even heard of before.

It felt like Summer in Berlin for the whole four days I spent there. On Friday I met some friends at a park before the festival to get in the mood and this was to be the norm for the whole festival. The bands started rather early, so I sadly missed a few first ones every day. What I really feel sad about is missing Swedish female psych rock band MaidaVale on Saturday, since I really wanted to see them after just checking them out before the festival. Ordering a hamburger in town just before and not remembering the right starting time were my mistakes and I only made it there when they had just finished... Oh well, hopefully some other time.

I was most active on Friday arriving to see half of the second band Pretty Lightning. They were good and a bit different from the main emphasis of the festival (see my video below):

I of course really enjoyed all the rest of the bands and it was first time to see Nebula and Death Alley. Because of the huge size of the venue the sound got a bit muddy and echoed when you were at the back but getting closer to the bands helped a lot. Monolord were great as always, Monster Magnet played quite a lot of songs from the new album that I have not really got into so much yet but Dave was on fire anyway. I even had some stamina left to check out the cool dj who played until 3 in the morning. What a great night! I must also say that liked the outdoor area with bars, food-stalls, dj's, karaoke etc. Getting and paying with the "desert dollars" was pain in the ass for everybody, though.

After sadly missing MaidaVale on Saturday I watched most of the Horizon show before heading back to the sunny river bank outdoor area. Cool 70s styled hard rock band! King Buffalo was a very nice new find for me and I highly enjoyed Elder, Lucifer and Graveyard as well. Luckily I was still awake when Yuri Gagagarin played the last slot of Saturday after midnight. I was totally mind-blown and couldn't even shoot video anymore... We definitely need to get these guys to play in Finland!

On Sunday I was pretty wasted and tired although I still had a lot of fun... No videos were shot that day, but the highlights were Church of the Cosmic Skull (again, a rather different act than the rest), Jex Thoth, Eyehategod, Radio Moscow and the very energetic High on Fire.

All in all, Desertfest Berlin 2018 was an excellent festival and superb experience and I'm sure I will return!

Here's a few pics from the festival area that also of course featured merch stalls (cool posters, t-shirts, World of Sound & Burning World Records distros etc.) as well as a tattoo studio.

There was very little time for sightseeing this time but we did go to a few record stores and flee markets etc. The best second hand record store we popped in was Waxart on Gärtnerstr. 23. They had optic art walls and even a small bar in there! See the pics below.

Next a few pics taken at the parks & restaurants...

Just before going to the airport and back to Finland our Desertfest Berlin pioneers showed us around the old festival area where the first six or so editions took place. The next pics are from there, looking pretty groovy...

Thank you Berlin, Desertfest & the best of friends, I love you all!

Not a bad start for our new club, although there were some chaos and techical problems at the beginning since the PA etc. is not working properly... There really should be a house sound guy to take full responsibility that everything works okay!!! But the owners couldn't care less.

The bands still all gave us great performances, thanks to them and all the people who paid the ticket and took the ride!

H2Ö Festival, Turku, Finland, 18.-19.7.2014

H2Ö is a new alternative music festival in Turku organized by the same people who used to run ILMIÖ festival before that. I was really looking forward to this festival since among many other great bands Gong were supposed to play there. Due to Daevid Allen's health problems (cancer in the neck) their performance was cancelled which was a bummer. Luckily legendary space rock masters Hawkwind, about the only possible band to be able to fill Gong's pothead pixie hats, was available to replace them and returned to Turku ten years after their Ruisrock Festival gig in 2004! Oh happy days.

DAY 1

After a very hard morning moving houses I was picked up by a few friends and we headed towards Turku. I checked in at the Borea boat hostel, who gave a discount to festival goers. As is usual the case, the festival busses were not that frequent or even properly advertised, but the hostel manager was so kind that she proposed to give me a lift in her car. Now that's customer service!

The H2Ö festival took place in the beautiful and historical old Ruissalo dockyard that had several nice vintage buildings. There were as many as ten different venues in all possible sizes so that all the hundred or so bands could play. Check out the map of the area.

I sadly missed the dream pop band Slow Blvd, as well as a few minutes of the "lazer metal band" Nightsatan show that had started at 16:30 in one of the indoor venues called Suuli. They had great background projections and were enjoying themselves and the audience had fun as well. You can see my video footage below. Lots of synths & keyboards in this band as well as electronic drums and robotic vocals. Very cool!

Right after Nightsatan I headed towards Kesanto stage to watch some jazzy versions of old hits by Kauko Röyhkä played by The Mokners feat. Kauko Röyhkä. This worked much better than expected! Then I watched some of Syntetisaattoriorkesteri Galaksi, Olimpia Splendid, Cleaning Women, Mad Professor (UK), Islaja and Kap Kap, all pretty nice performances. There were also some reggae bands playing.

I had to cue before I was able to get in into the biggest indoor venue Veistämö (that also served drinks and food!) to see the US folk artist Josephine Foster. Of course I found out at the door that you didn't have to cue in with the press pass... Anyway, as I already noticed during the Olimpia Splendid set, the PA system was way too small for the big and very cozy Veistämö venue and there were some technical problems as well on that particular stage on Friday. The audience clutter was louder than the performance so I didn't want stay for the whole gig although Foster and the guy with her sounded okay and people seemed to like them.

There's been a lot of underground hype about a new garage/punk/rock'n'roll band Räjäyttäjät (The Exploders in English...) and they were playing at 20:30 at one of the smallest outdoor stages called Autotalli (The Garage...). They played with full energy and the fans went almost as nuts as the band members who mingled with the full-packed audience while playing. I really liked their show!

Then it was time for Jarse who were a duo playing very psychedelic jams over Conan the Barbarian movie with some of the dialogue audible! One of the highlights for sure, just wait until these guys release something or play live near you. 20 000 HZ was pretty cool too. Then I had some time to drink a few cold ones and get some food before my favourite band Hawkwind would start on the huge Meri (The Sea) outdoor stage...

I had been spotting quite a few Hawkwind t-shirts the whole day and it looked like the Hawks were the band that most of the audience had come to see. There were maybe three thousand people to watch them when the sun finally started to go down a bit. You could sense the anticipitation in the air and when the band started at 23:00 the audience went wild! No dancers this time, but the big band and psychedelic lightshow was enough to see and the sound was really good after the beginning. I didn't really know what to expect and that's the way I wanted it but I got to say that I was positively surprised by the energy and dedication of the whole band. Dave Brock, the only original Psychedelic Warlord left in the band, also seemed fit and didn't have to go off stage for 15 minutes to rest like I've heard has happened recently. He played a lot of guitar but only sang a few songs. Mr. Dibs proved to be a great center figure and it was lovely to see Tim Blake live for the first time playing his Theremin. No Gong, but at least their old synth wizard Tim Blake! Fred and Neil were also excellent, like of course Richard Chadwick, Hawkwind's drummer since the late 80's. The gig felt too short of course, but it did last for well over one hour. Here's the set list:

Seasons
Steppenwolf
Arrival in Utopia
Prometheus
You'd Better Believe It
Assault and Battery
Golden Void
Sonic Attack
Brainstorm
----------------------------
Assassins of Allah
Angels of Death

After Hawkwind I was pretty blown away, but there was still Kuusumun Profeetta to play at the other rather big open-air stage Kesanto. The guys played a lot of rather heavy songs that were apparently new since I didn't know them but also some old classics and peaceful ballads like "Sataa lumi hiljaa maihin ja varhain". One of the best performances that night for sure. Too bad I missed Imatran Voima who were playing at the same time as Kuusumun Profeetta and also Siinai, Liimanarina and Dreadlocktales. I did manage to get glimpses of 20 000 HZ and Absoluuttinen Nollapiste, though. I was ready to go to sleep at this point.

DAY 2

I woke up pretty early on Saturday to get some breakfast but skipped the morning sauna the boat hostel was offering. Luckily all the cabins had showers. I went out at one o'clock to check out the Forum Marinum neighbourhood like the famous Suomen Joutsen boat and then decided to walk to the festival area. The weather was really warm also on saturday and the trip felt pretty long. Anyway, I arrived to the festival site slightly before the doors opened for public at 14 so I took some pictures of the empty area.

Only a handful of people were watching a new band called Amapolar who started at Takapiha stage at 14:30. Too bad, since they played quite nice, melodic, sunny and a little bit of psychedelic Finnish pop/rock. Their drummer is from Spain and he and his wife, the bassist/singer used to be a in a band called The Satellites of Love who sang in English and were a bit more psychedelic. The accordian player made Amapolar sounds a bit unique. A nice way to start off festival day two!

The next must-see for me was the occult psych/hard rock band Seremonia. They always give everything they've got and this time they did a really excellent job. I really loved the visuals, the sound was amazing and the band was in great form. The audience went crazy as well, even if it was still afternoon! I love these guys. Just check out my video...

I hadn't checked out the Laituri (Pier) stage the day before so I had a peek and saw some of this female troubadour's performance. I've seen her before somewhere but I don't remember her name and it was not announced at the timetable but she has a cheery, lovely attitude.

Two Finnish underground icons Pedro Hietanen and M. A. Numminen played next as their alter egos Gommi & Pommi dressed up in funny animal costumes and they were aided by Sesse Possu (Sesse the Pig aka Severi Pyysalo) on xylophone. A very entertaining and funny show!

I also checked out some of Color Dolor and liked them, and Cosmo Jones Beat Machine made the audience dance. At this point I just wondered around the festival area since there was nothing special that I needed to see. People were definitely having fun and enjoying themselves. Kemialliset Ystävät is a band that I have always wanted to see live but today would be the first time, so I was quite excited. They have a unique blend of psych folk, jazz and electronica that I found most mesmerising. A really great gig and one of the highlights for me! Good thing the PA problems of the previous day seemed to have been solved.

At 20:00 Pharaoh Overlord started their very experimental and weird gig at Takapiha (Backyard) dressed in black shirts, jeans and life-vests covering their heads in tights. These guys are rather silly and/or insane, you know... They had a new singer, or I maybe I just didn't recognize him since his head was covered in red tights... An attaché case was firmly in his hand for his whole performance. Interesting! Not what I had expected, but a very enjoyable show nevertheless!

I accidentally missed the organ/drums duo Sagor & Swing from Sweden, but was sure to be in time for A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble (UK) after seeing some bits of trance act Accu and the great Lau Nau. Of course there had to be some technical problems and their show was delayed... Anyway, when you see a guy with a sitar on the stage you wait until they're ready to play... And it was worth it! Just samples/CD's/effects and sitar, but it sounded very groovy and trippy. For some reason I was too restless to watch it all so I again wandered off to see what else was going on.

At this point I'd like to state that there were quite a lot of things happening in addition to live music. There were a couple of smiths at work, various performancers in strange and funny costumes, an Aquasynth that started making weird sounds when enough people were filling their water bottles, a graffiti artist etc. All this made a nice addition to the vibe of the festival.

To close the night and a very fine festival, I spent some time with a few friends but was too tired to really get interested in Cola & Jimmy who sounded cool or Cold Pupu Sauna. Most of the Seremonia members and some other friends of mine went to see the hard core band Kovaa Rasvaa who were playing at a club in Turku center , but I decided to go to the hostel instead. It was a wise move, since I had to be up early the next morning and head back to Helsinki... What a great weekend, and H2Ö is definitely a festival I'd like to return to. There were more than 7500 people there I've heard and everything went fine, so I think they will make it happen again next year. One of the best and nicest festivals I've been to!

Videos from Crabstock on Ice - Fruits de Mer Festival of Psychedelia 3.5.2014

Okay, here's what I shot with my mobile phone at the festival. First we had the lovely Jack Ellister from The Netherlands who definitely won some new fans (or maybe even hearts...) with his intimate performance and bunter... Jack had played two earlier gigs in Finland as well around the May Day.

Then it was time for a lovely acid folk duo Us and Them from Stockholm. This was the couple's first gig outside of Sweden and went really well. They also had some pre-recorded Mellotron & stuff coming from iPod.

The Legendary Flower Punk from St. Petersburg had a more experimental but very psychedelic touch, I only got to shoot a bit of it.

Sendelica from Wales did a mighty comeback to Finland. They were supposed to be the headliners but didn't want to be the last band after all so here we go starting off with a cool jam. Kamille from The Legendary Flower Punk helped out with electronics just like he did last time in Helsinki...

Finally, a little bit after 1AM we had Octopus Syng who played maybe the best gig I've even seen them play and believe me I've seen them live a lot! Very energetic, psychedelic and even mad show, I was so into it that I couldn't shoot more than this I'm afraid... People were going nuts!

Thanks a lot for Keith from Fruits de Mer from allowing this happen and even being present with his lovely wive Liz, the amazing bands for playing the festival and making it such a special happening, Kalle aka VJ Hypericum for the very cool projections and Kimmo from Albinö Rhino who really saved the whole night by mixing all the bands. Also spesial thanks to Harri for hosting the Sendelica boys and helping out in other ways as well... I really enjoyed the whole experience!

My weekend in Manchester (Electric Jug Club on 28.2. & Temples on 1.3.14)

Last weekend was spent in Manchester. It was my first visit to this town and I had wonderful time. I saw some old friends who had managed to score me a ticket for the sold-out Temples show at Manchester Academy 2. I wanted to make a full weekend trip out of it, and noticed that there was a cool looking psych club night on Friday at Gulliver's, so I just bought a ticket for that too (only 5 pounds in advance).

First pint before the Gulliver's

It was the first time that Electric Jug had their club night at Gulliver's in the very groovy part of the city called Northern Quarter. Previously they had partied a little bit further away from the city in a smaller venue. Gulliver's was a pub that had a rather small but very nice venue upstairs and was perfect for this kind of club night. I met some very friendly people at the pub before the club started and had a couple of ales with them. Also the Electric Jug organizers were very nice and helpful and I enjoyed chatting with them. The first band of the evening was The Black Delta Movement from Hull. I had just checked them out in the internet and didn't know much about them, but their quite psychedelic, powerful and intense garage psych/indie rock was very enjoyable most of the time. Some of the tracks rocked really hard but there were also more melodic moments. These young guys have several CD EP's out and their manager gave me the latest one to review.

Then it was time for a local band called The Underground Youth that I first became aware of due to the Fuzz Club Record's excellent compilation The Reverb Conspiracy Volume One (also including for example Dead Skeletons, Black Lizard, The Lucid Dream etc.). The Underground Youth's set was definitely inspired by The Velvet Underground as well as Brian Jonestown Massacre etc. and I think I could also hear some Joy Division in their somewhat dark and melancholic sound. They had a cool female drummer who was standing and only played a big tom and snare which was cool. The other guitar player who also sang had a very cool Vox guitar and groovy effect pedals that he used a lot. Another very enjoyable show!

After the bands the party continued until 2AM but I was too tired to stay that long. I still managed to hear many cool songs played by the djs like "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" by Nancy Sinatra. The only thing I missed that night was a psychedelic lightshow but the boys told me that they were working on that so maybe there will be some mind-blowing projections next time. Go and check out this monthly club if you happen to be in Manchester!

After wondering around town and going to some museums on Saturday (see photos below if interested) it was time to go to see Temples, one of my favourite bands right now. They managed to get quite a lot of attention with their singles last year, and the debut album released last month has been on top ten in the UK at least. I really like their 60s inspired psych rock/pop music that has great melodies, driving beats, lush instumentation and modern production values. There were two support acts that I was not familiar before, but I only managed to see the first one called Dark Bells. They were a nice psych/shoegazer/indie rock trio with a female singer-bassist and sounded surprisingly good. Too bad that I forgot my earplugs (and they didn't sell them anywhere at the venue) since the clear and very good vocals were mixed so loud that my ears were hurting a bit. So after a few songs it was time to go downstairs to the very cozy bar for a couple of pints. I missed the second support band Childhood altogether so I can't comment on them, sorry.

When the Temples gig was due to begin the venue was totally packed and it was really hard to get more refreshments from the bar at the back. They started with my favourite track "Colours to Life" and the whole place was mesmerized. I was a bit dissappointed that they had no psychedelic lights or video projections and just the standard rock show lights were used. The sound was crystal clear and not so loud as I had feared. They played almost every song on the album and at least "Ankh", the b-side of "Colours to Life" 10". There were some a little bit extended jams parts which was great, but the band had a pretty cool and distant way to perform, which might have made some people to think that they were bored or tired. Well, maybe they were, but the playing and singing was excellent, and they did move around a little bit. The other guitar player also played lots of keyboards which worked out really well most of the times. You could feel the psychedelic energies going through the audience, and lots of people were also dancing. It felt to me that the set was rather short and the encore was their latest single "Mesmerized" which was really mind-blowing! The best gig I've seen so far this year, well, the Psychic TV/PTV3 gig at Tavastia was probably as good. I'm really doing my best to see Temples again soon and so should you. There would have been a cool after party by Remake Remodel at The Ruby Lounge but I was just too tired.

Another video from the gig:

Here are some random pictures from Manchester. I liked the town since it was not too big but not too small and still had some old buildings left even though it was pretty much bombed down to the ground during the WW II. The War Museum was the most interestíng museum there: recommended. Piccadilly Records are of course legendary but there were other cool record stores and most of them in the Northern Quarter area.
